520 ## - SUMMARY, ETC.
Summary, etc. For over four hundred years between 1351 and 1767, Ayutthaya was the capital of Siam, renowed throughout the world for its wealth and beautiful temples. During this period it became one of the most important trading cities in the region and a magnet for travellers, missionaries and adventurers. Ayutthaya's position on the confluence of three rivers, most notably the Chao Phraya, was crucial to its success and countless travellers braved the 65 km journey from the bar at Paknam up the mosquito-infested river to the glittering spires of the capital.
